Bank Negara Malaysia Scholarship 2018 (READ THIS BEFORE APPLYING)

READ THIS BEFORE APPLYING

Bank Negara Scholarship is one of the most prestigious scholarship that is made available for post-SPM candidates. There are 2 categories in this scholarship, Kijang Emas and Kijang. Kijang Emas is a scholarship for Straight A+ candidates who are allowed to pursue any courses including those that aren't related to Bank Negara. For the Kijang scholarship, it is available to 8A+/A candidates for courses such as Economics, Accounting, Finance, Actuarial Science, Law and Computer Science. Now I will like to tell you my piece of advice that I really wish someone had told me when I was applying.

I am a Straight A+ SPM Candidate and I applied for Computer Science as my first choice and Accounting as my second choice (Courses which are related to BN). As I was eligible for Kijang Emas, I applied for it hoping to be considered for Kijang too. After submitting my application (which had to be done 6 days after the SPM results), I waited patiently hoping and praying for a phone call or an email. 2 weeks after the application deadline, I heard news regarding the Bank Negara camp that will be taking place at the same weekend. I instantly knew I wasn't one of the lucky ones and accepted the fact that I wasn't chosen.

I called BN (the number will be in an automated email that you will receive after submitting) to get a clear clarification on why I wasn't chosen for the scholarship. He told me that for 2018, there were 160 Straight A+ candidates applied for Kijang Emas and that they only pick 12 out of the 160 people to fight for the scholarship. These 12 people are chosen by their sports involvement, co-co activities, and essay. After hearing this, I was totally fine because I knew that I wasn't Top 12 in the country. But, this actually means that the 148 Kijang Emas (Straight A+) candidates who might want to pursue courses related to Bank Negara will not be considered for Kijang which is very unfair. Students who received at least 8A+/A in their SPM will get an opportunity to fight for their scholarship but I (Straight A+) will not.

For applicants who received Straight A+ and want to pursue courses related to BN, please reconsider applying for Kijang and not Kijang Emas as there is a higher chance of getting it (told by the person on the phone). I really hope BN fixes this system for the upcoming applicants as it really isn't fair. If you are reading this and it is not too late please share with your other friends who are applying as well.

I am not sad, just disappointed that I did not get the chance to go to the camp and present myself to BN. As a Muslim, I am well aware that Allah does everything for a reason so I will carry on trying and work hard to obtain other scholarships. I will update and write a blog for all the interviews that I am shortlisted for. Fill free to ask me any questions below.
