International School of Kuala Lumpur IB Scholarship Experience

ISKL IB Scholarship is one of the first scholarship that is open to post-SPM candidates. It usually opens around Jan and closes at Feb. This scholarship offers a 2-year IB Programme at ISKL which cost approximately RM200k. Yes, you read that right. It cost RM 200k.

The first step is just to fill in the printable form and prepare all the necessary documents. I can't really remember all the documents that were needed to prepare but it wasn't too difficult to get them. Mail the documents preferably a week before the deadline so it will arrive on-time. And, you are already one step closer.

A few weeks later, your parents will get an email from the school regarding a placement test. This test is basically to just see how good you are in English and Maths. The test will be at the school itself, so you are required to go to there. The best part was that the test on my year was a day before my SPM results so it really distracted me from being nervous.

I was nervous for this test as I thought it will be about IB Maths and English. I ended up studying Grade 12 Maths and doing a whole lot of English Comprehension online. In reality, the English test was an essay which I wasn't prepared for. There were 4 questions you could have chosen from. 2 of them were about literature which isn't my cup of tea and 1 was a really wide topic. I chose the topic "If you are given a chance to contribute to the world, what will you do?" (something like that) I ended up talking about technological advancement which probably wasn't a good option ( I will tell you why later). If you are a mastermind in English, then this test would not have been an issue for you.

Next, we were given a mathematics test. The test was 90 mins each by the way. The mathematics test was basically SPM Add Maths without a calculator. If you are like me and didn't touch Add Maths since SPM and have forgotten everything, well you are screwed. I think I did okay for the test except for questions that needed formulas that were given in SPM but weren't given in this test. Advice, just remember how to do maths without a calculator and remember the formulas (eg: trigo formulas and progression formulas). Don't worry too much about anything.

All in all, the teachers were really nice and ISKL looked like a good school to pursue my pre-u but I did not get to the interview stage. I don't think they really look into your trials results because people with worst results than me got called for the interview. I don't really mind not getting the scholarship because the teacher that conducted the exams said that they only wanted people who are really passionate in taking IB and if you are not interested please do not waste their time.  I didn't really want to take IB so that was probably a good call. If you are taking this scholarship, good luck.
Thank you very much for taking your time to read this. Fill free to ask me questions if you have any.
