Petronas Youngstars Day 2018

Last week on the 23rd of April 2018, I attended the Petronas Youngstars Day 2018.  The news came to me on the 11th of April when I was admitted in the hospital. I didn't really give much thought to it as I had upcoming interviews before PYD which just occupied my thoughts. Well, when the day came, I reached KDU College, Glenmarie at around 8am. It was about a 45 mins drive from my house. When I arrived at KDU, I was immediately separated from my dad. I was guided to a hall full of students. We had to register with our original and certified documents (instruction will be given when you are shortlisted) at the counter. We were assigned to designated computer labs and were required to sit with people with the same lab number. We were then given a brief summary of the whole scholarship programme and about Petronas.

Around 9.30 am, we were guided by volunteers to our computer labs. We had to sit for two computer tests. The first one was a Cambridge Personality Test (45 mins) and the second one was a Cambridge TSA Test (90 mins). The personality test was fine and very easy. Just answer it "honestly". The TSA test, however, was actually not as hard as expected. To prepare for the test, I actually did some practice TSA Test (Just Google TSA Assessment) and those practice tests were tough and tricky but the actual exam wasn't too difficult. We were then provided lunch back in the same hall while waiting for our original documents to be handed back to us. At 1.30ish, they showed us a list of candidates that were moving on to the 2nd phase of the assessment. There were 200+ names on that list and my name was the first on that list (just because my name starts with "Aa"). They divided the 200 students into 3 groups (A, B & C) randomly. Group A went first to carry out the case study, followed by Group B and Group C. I was fortunately in Group A15 and was one of the first groups to finish the assessment.

A few minutes later,  all group A candidates were guided to a small auditorium with inclined seats. In the auditorium, we were seats according to our smaller groups (A1-A15).  A brief presentation was shown to us regarding the following assessment and what we had to do (not the question, just basic tips and tricks like greet the interviewers, look smart and all that). After the 10 minutes break to solat, papers with the topic of our case study was given to all the candidates in the auditorium. The case study was about ways to increase the sales and attract customers to the Petronas Station. Literally, don't worry about the case study, the topic has been the same for the past 2 previous years as I read in other blogs. We were given around 15-20 minutes to think of solutions and ideas regarding the topic. It was all pretty chill, the guy next to me was googling the topic and taking information from the internet, I was just writing whatever that came to my mind. It is also good to know the names of your group members so that you can address them by their names in the group discussion later. We were then brought to a separate room consisting of 6 tables and 2 interviewers. The tables were facing each other with 3 on each side. The interviewers were ex-Petronas Scholars and they are working for Petronas now. They ask us one of one to introduce ourselves and then gave us 5 minutes to present our ideas. They weren't really strict with the 5 minutes limit, one girl took around 6 minutes and they did not bring it up. For some candidates, they may ask some questions regarding your ideas and solutions. Just answer them to your best ability. Some guy in my group did not even answer the question that was brought to him so yeah just try your best. After everyone gave their view on the solutions, we were given around 30 minutes as a group to present 1 solution to the interviewers. I came up with an idea to come up with a theme for our solution and elaborate on that theme. My theme was "Customer's Satisfaction" and each member gave one idea from their solutions and I tried to combine them with each other even if weren't very good. In the end, I became the leader of my team, there were 2 people in my team that actually came up with good solutions and spoke without me telling them to. Also, give opportunities to others members to speak by asking them what's their opinion or what's their view on your findings.

In the end, the interviewers were very nice and friendly. Remember to smile, be confident, talk clearly, be the leader and carry your team. We were allowed to go home after the group case study at around 4pm. Feel free to ask me any questions that fill your curiosity down below. I have also went to TM and JPA interview but never really had the time to write a blog post about it. Will try to do it soon. 😀
